A Model-Independent Photometric Redshift Estimator

چکیده

We derive a simple empirical photometric redshift estimator using a training set of galaxies with multiband photometry and measured redshifts in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). This estimator is model-independent; it does not use spectral templates. The dispersion between the estimated redshifts and the spectroscopically measured ones is small; the dispersions range from σz ≃ 0.03 to 0.1 for z ∼< 2 galaxies, and from σz ≃ 0.14 to 0.25 for z ∼> 2 galaxies. The predictions provided by our empirical redshift estimator agree well with recently measured galaxy redshifts. We illustrate how our empirical redshift estimator can be modified to include flat spectrum galaxies with 1.4 ∼< z ∼< 2.

A Model-independent Photometric Redshift Estimator for Type Ia Supernovae

The use of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as cosmological standard candles is fundamental in modern observational cosmology. In this letter, we derive a simple empirical photometric redshift estimator for SNe Ia using a training set of SNe Ia with multiband (griz) light-curves and spectroscopic redshifts obtained by the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). This estimator is analytical and model-indepen...

What Lies Beneath: Using P(z) to Reduce Systematic Photometric Redshift Errors

We use simulations to demonstrate that photometric redshift “errors” can be greatly reduced by using the photometric redshift probability distribution p(z) rather than a one-point estimate such as the most likely redshift. In principle this involves tracking a large array of numbers rather than a single number for each galaxy. We introduce a very simple estimator that requires tracking only a s...

Incorporating Photometric Redshift Probability Density Information into Real-Space Clustering Measurements

The use of photometric redshifts in cosmology is increasing. Often, however these photo-zs are treated like spectroscopic observations, in that the peak of the photometric redshift, rather than the full probability density function (PDF), is used. This overlooks useful information inherent in the full PDF. We introduce a new real-space estimator for one of the most used cosmological statistics,...

Photometric Redshift of the Grb 981226 Host Galaxy

No optical afterglow was found for the dark burst GRB 981226 and hence no absorption redshift has been obtained. We here use ground-based and space imaging observations to analyse the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the host galaxy. By comparison with synthetic template spectra we determine the photometric redshift of the GRB 981226 host to be zphot = 1.11±0.06 (68% confidence level). Whi...

The Efficacy of Galaxy Shape Parameters in Photometric Redshift Estimation: A Neural Network Approach

We present a determination of the effects of including galaxy morphological parameters in photometric redshift estimation with an artificial neural network method. Neural networks, which recognize patterns in the information content of data in an unbiased way, can be a useful estimator of the additional information contained in extra parameters, such as those describing morphology, if the input...
